Five Healthy Treats Your Dog Will Love (And You’ll Feel Good About!)
We love spoiling our furry companions. Those big, pleading eyes and happy tail wags are hard to resist. But while commercial dog treats are convenient, they often come loaded with artificial colors, preservatives and questionable ingredients. Why not take control and whip up some healthy, delicious treats your dog will adore? Not only will you know exactly what’s going into their snacks, but you’ll also be boosting their overall well-being.
“Pupsicles”
Warmer days call for cool treats, and frozen “Pupsicles” with fruit and veggie goodness are a fantastic way to hydrate your dog while providing a dose of vitamins and fiber.
To make these, combine plain, unsweetened yogurt (or kefir for added probiotics) with chopped fruits like blueberries, strawberries, or banana (in moderation), and pureed vegetables like carrots or spinach in a blender or food processor. Add water or unsalted chicken broth to achieve a pourable consistency. Pour the mixture into ice cube trays or silicone molds and freeze for several hours until solid. Serve as a refreshing treat on hot days.
Yogurt provides calcium and probiotics, fruits offer antioxidants and vitamins, and vegetables contribute fiber and essential nutrients. Remember to avoid grapes and raisins, as they are toxic to dogs.
Sweet Potato Chews
Forget those rawhide chews filled with questionable ingredients. Sweet potato chews are a natural, delicious, and safe alternative that will keep your dog entertained and their teeth clean.
Simply wash and slice sweet potatoes into thick strips (about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick). Place the slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake at 225°F (107°C) for 3-4 hours, flipping halfway through, until they are firm and chewy. Let them cool completely before giving them to your dog.
Sweet potatoes are packed with fiber, beta-carotene, and vitamins. The chewing action helps to clean teeth and massage gums.
PB and Banana Bites
This simple recipe combines two dog-friendly favorites into a tasty and nutritious treat: peanut butter and banana bites.
Combine one ripe mashed banana, half a cup of unsweetened peanut butter (make sure it doesn’t contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs), and one cup of rolled oats in a bowl and mix well. Form small balls or use a cookie cutter to create shapes. Place the treats on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool completely.
Bananas are a good source of potassium and fiber, peanut butter provides protein and healthy fats, and oats offer fiber and carbohydrates.
Homemade Jerky
Homemade dehydrated chicken or beef jerky is a fantastic high-value treat for training or rewarding good behavior.
Slice boneless, skinless chicken breast or lean beef into thin strips. Place the strips on a dehydrator or oven rack and dehydrate at 145-160°F (63-71°C) or as low as your oven goes. Bake 4-6 hours or until the jerky is dry and chewy. Let cool completely. This is a pure protein treat with no added fillers or preservatives. It’s perfect for dogs with allergies or sensitivities.
Veggie Treats
For dogs who love vegetables, simple veggie “cookies” are a healthy and delicious snack. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
Combine one cup of cooked, pureed carrots, sweet potatoes or green beans with half a cup of whole wheat or oat flour and one egg in a bowl. Form small cookies and place on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes.
This is a great source of fiber and vitamins, and a good way to use leftover vegetables.
Let’s Get Baking!
Always introduce new treats gradually to avoid digestive upset. Adjust portion sizes based on your dog’s size, activity level and dietary needs. Consult with your veterinarian if your dog has any specific dietary restrictions or health concerns. And, always provide fresh water. Making your own dog treats is a rewarding experience that allows you to provide your furry friend with healthy and delicious snacks. Your kids will love joining in too. So, get creative, have fun and watch those tails wag joyfully!
